Blog week ending 26th March - WGSG

This week we, along with the rest of the country, marked the UK National Day of Reflection.  At school we all observed the minute’s silence, pausing to reflect upon the challenges that have been overcome, remembering those who have lost loved ones and taking a moment to be thankful for all that others have done to help and support us. 

Form tutors shared slides provided by the organisers, Marie Curie, and discussed thoughts and points raised by our students.  This Easter, the Covid regulations will begin to relax as we follow the government’s road map to recovery, providing cautious optimism about a return to socialising and businesses re-opening in the near future.

Year 9 Food Technology are currently working on a ‘professional’ module; in this practical lesson students worked on the presentation and plating of desserts, ensuring they are to the standard of a professional commercial kitchen.

Our Year 9 Bronze Arts Awards Students have now received their certificates, this is a tremendous achievement completed despite the restrictions caused by lockdown.  They are: Mmesomah M, Thenujha N, Dara O, Haleemat P, Newisrael N, Connie S, Shobika S and Sophie S. The other two students who passed, but are not pictured are Georgiana H and Ruby-Rose K.

Mrs Mattheus Year 7 French students have been researching inspirational French women as an extension topic in conjunction with International Women’s Day.  Students explored a range of amazing women each uniquely inspirational, including;

Mrs Munden has been working with her Y12 Biologists as they spend a practical lesson exploring transverse sections in plants.  Using celery, students were able to identify and observe the cells that help water and minerals travel through the leaves, stem and roots.

For the last few remote Science lessons Y7 were invited to research the solar system and creatively model their findings.  Some projects focussed on the scale of the planet sizes, some on the distance from the Sun and lots of projects showed extensive deeper research in areas of interest.  The finished projects were amazing, ranging from 3D posters and painted canvases to models made with a variety of materials.  Here is a small selection …

Mrs Munden’s Year 7 students had also been working on a space project during online learning.  As part of the project, they created amazing posters and models to showcase their understanding .. and enthusiasm for the topic!  Pictured, students proudly showing off their excellent work.

Please could I ask that you are mindful of our neighbours and local residents when you are either dropping off or collecting your daughter from school.  I appreciate that for some of our students, being driven to school is the only available option, however, may I urge those for whom there are public transport or private coach alternative routes to strongly consider taking advantage of them (further details are available on our website here Transport - Wilmington Grammar School for Girls (gsgw.org.uk) )  If you are travelling by car to school please be respectful of our neighbours and avoid blocking private driveways or causing an obstruction, blocking the passage of local residents and bus/coach services.  Thank you for your support.
